Jane Nakagawa will present at Azaria in Shizuoka City on February 8, 14:00-16:00.
The first half of this presentation will be a workshop and discussion on teaching global issues in language courses using songs and poems. Participants will share teaching ideas with each other in groups. Sample materials will be provided. We will focus especially on the notion of cultural identities appearing in song lyrics and poetry suitable for language learners.
In the second half of this presentation participants will engage in a guided discussion related to their own cultural identities. What are our identities and how do these identities influence the way we teach and learn? One objective will be to learn more about each other and ourselves and in so doing enrich our teaching practice.
Biodata: Jane Joritz-Nakagawa is a former associate professor at a national school of education in Japan, the author of ten books of poetry and numerous journal articles on literature and language teaching (especially related to cooperative learning and global issues), a frequent presenter at JALT and other conferences, and a resident of Japan for many years. Currently she writes and researches full time and guest lectures at a Chubu area university and elsewhere. In 2020 she will be teaching at Shizuoka University and Hamamatsu University School of Medicine.
